Gerdau Açominas Ouro Branco steel plant (Usina siderúrgica Gerdau Açominas (Portuguese)), also known as Ouro Branco steel plant, Presidente Artur Bernardes steel plant, is a blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) steel plant operating in Ouro Branco, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Background

Brazilian steelmaker Gerdau S.A. is one of the Americas' leading producers of long steel, and one of the world's largest recyclers and special steel suppliers.[1] The Gerdau Açominas steel plant in Ouro Branco is the company's flagship Brazilian steelmaking facility, with installed capacity to produce 7.6 million tons of steel per year.[2][3]

Originally known as Usina Presidente Arthur Bernardes, the Açominas plant started operations in 1986.[4] Gerdau acquired an equity stake in the plant in 1997, and the assets of Gerdau and Açominas were merged in 2003 under the name Gerdau Açominas.[5]

Facilities at the Ouro Branco plant were significantly upgraded in 2007 with the addition of a second blast furnace and a second sintering plant. A second coking plant was commissioned the following year.[6]

In late 2019, Gerdau announced that it would invest in a major overhaul of Açominas' aging blast furnace #1 and its associated coking plant in 2020.[7]

The plant's product mix consists of slabs, plates, coiled plates, hot rolled sheets and coils, ingots, blooms and billets, medium and heavy structural shapes, and wire rods.[8] The unit exports its production to more than 40 countries, making it one of Brazil's largest steel exporters.[4]
