Gunung Raja Paksi West Java steel plant, also known as Gunung Garuda, is a blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) and electric arc furnace (EAF) steel plant operating in Sukadanau, West Java, Indonesia.

Location

The map below shows the exact location of the plant in Sukadanau, West Java, Indonesia:

Background

The Gunung Raja Paksi (GRP) steel plant began operating in 1986.[1] The plant built its first blast furnace in 2014. In January 2017, Gunung Garuda merged with and sold its assets to Gunung Raja Paksi.[2]

Expansion

In February 2021, PT Gunung Raja Paksi Steel announced it would be commissioning a new blast furnace with a capacity of 1.5 million tonnes to produce slab. The plant was expected to be commissioned in Q2 2021.[3] Sources report different numbers for the expected capacity of this new furnace. However, no update has been published since then, so it's unlikely the new furnace was completed.

In November 2022, Gunung Raja Paksi and Australia-based Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) signed an MoU to investigate the use of green hydrogen and green ammonia supplied by FFI to help decarbonize GRP’s steelmaking factories. This includes transformation of the upstream steelmaking process, which includes Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) and Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI), as well as the modification of existing and future steelmaking process at the West Java plant.[4][5][6] As of November 2023, he project is undergoing a technical feasibility study.[7]
