Background

The Üzülmez coal mine is an underground mine, operated by Üzülmez Taşkömürü Işletme Müessesesi, a TTK subsidiary, producing 158 thousand tons per annum, near Asma, Zonguldak, Turkey.[3] The mine is located in the Zonguldak coalfield alongside four other mines operated by TTK subsidiaries, Amasra, Kozlu, Armutçuk and Karadon.[4] Although mining activities in the Üzülmez district of Zonguldak started in mid-19th century, the current mine was opened in 1926 with the establishment of the Maden Kömürleri İşleri (Mine Coal Enterprise), as a subsidiary of the then state-owned İş Bank. In 1936, the mine was transferred to another state-owned bank, Etibank. In 1957, Türkiye Kömür İşletmeleri (Turkey Coal Enterprises) or TKI was established and took over the Üzülmez mine. In 1983, another public body, Türkiye Taşkömürü Kurumu (Turkey Hard Coal Company) or TTK was established and received the Üzülmez mine through its subsidiary Üzülmez Taşkömürü işletme Müessesesi or Üzülmez T.İ.M. (Üzülmez Hard Coal Enterprise) which has operated the mine since then.[5]

In 2020 Üzülmez mine had 1619 employees of which 1436 were laborers and 183 office workers. The same year, Üzülmez had 165 million tons in reserves which were divided into 0.3 million ready, 132 million proven, and 32 million probable reserves according to TTK's categorization. TTK did not report possible reserves for the mine. Thus, the mine had 132.3 million tons in proven reserves (ready and proven) and 32 million tons in probable reserves (probable and possible) Üzülmez produced 158 thousand tons in 2020.[5]
