Background
In a Global investor Meet in 2010, ArcelorMittal signed an MoU with the Karnataka state government for establishing a 6 mtpa integrated steel plant and a 750MW captive power plant with an investment of INR 30,000 crores.[1] On 26 December 2018, ArcelorMittal executed a deal with Karnataka government a lease-cum-sale agreement for 2,643 acres of land in Ballari, Karnataka for constructing the steel plant and captive power plant.[2] In October 2023, ArcelorMittal decided to return the entire 2,643 acres of land and forfeit INR 267 crores spent on setting up the Ballari plant.[3][4]
