Background

In a Global investor Meet in 2010, ArcelorMittal signed an MoU with the Karnataka state government for establishing a 6 mtpa integrated steel plant and a 750MW captive power plant with an investment of INR 30,000 crores. On 26 December 2018, ArcelorMittal executed a deal with Karnataka government a lease-cum-sale agreement for 2,643 acres of land in Ballari, Karnataka for constructing the steel plant and captive power plant. In December 2022, the Karnataka state government decided to recover the land allotted to ArcelorMittal as the project did not take off.In October 2023, ArcelorMittal decided to return the entire 2,643 acres of land and forfeit INR 267 crores spent on setting up the Ballari plant.
