Baganuur power station (POSCO/MCS) was a proposed IGCC and coal-to-liquids power station in Baganuur area, Mongolia.

The project has had no developments since 2014, while plans for the 700 MW Baganuur power station has moved forward.

Background

POSCO (Korea) and MCS International started discussing this project in 2010, and formed the consortium Baganuur Energy Corporation. They have undertaken a feasibility study based on producing 408,000 tonnes of diesel, 81,000 tonnes of gasoline, and 90,000 tonnes of gas fuel a year.

An Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) coal-fired power plant is part of the project, but details have not been made publicly available by the company on whether it is proposed that this supply power to the grid or not. On its website, POSCO states that its "green energy plant business aims to provide clean energy to Mongolian society."

It is proposed that the CTL plant be built near the Baganuur mine. (Another rival CTL plant proposal is the Baganuur IGCC (Petrovis).) As of 2014 MCS states that "the Detailed Environmental Impact Assessment (DEIA) is currently under the process of getting approval. Currently the Project is in selection phase of main technology licensors as well as selection of its legal and financial advisors."

With no updates since 2014, the project appears deferred or abandoned.
