Background
In May of 2023, Equinor announced that development of Bay Du Nord has been paused for up to three years. However, according to Greenpeace, ". In August of 2023, Equinor reportedly proceeded with hiring a drilling rig to conduct exploration for more oil in the area, showing the company’s intent to pursue the project.[12]
According to Greenpeace, Bay du Nord is a symbol of climate hypocrisy, and present substantial risk to the surrounding areas. The campaigners claim Bay du Nord would "make local emissions targets unattainable" and further that "independent research has concluded that there is a 16% chance of a serious oil spill from the Bay du Nord project, which would have disastrous impacts on surrounding marine habitats."[12]
