Background

Berlins Creek mine, also known as Heaphy Mine, was an opencast sub-bituminous coal mine west of Inangahua on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. The mine was owned and operated by Heaphy Mining. It supplied industrial and domestic coal to the top half of the South Island.[7]

Some or all of the 2.17km2 mine was located on New Zealand department of conservation land.[8] [9]

Closure

In September 2021, Heaphy Mining Ltd posted a message on their Facebook social media page noting that the Heaphy mine had closed.[10] They also stated that if any parties were interested in the mine itself, the Coal Mining Lease would come up for renewal in 2034 and the Resources Consents in 2035.[10]
