Background

The pipeline is owned and operated by Gazprom.[13] The two operating segments run parallel to each other. The aggregate design capacity of the two pipelines combined is 115 bcm/year.[1] Despite language on the Gazprom website noting construction has been completed by 2017, the 2020 Gazprom Annual Report noted that construction was continuing on the Bovanenkovo-Ukhta 2 pipeline system.[14]

Route

A detailed route for this pipeline has been downloaded from OpenStreetMap.[15][16] It closely matches the route provided on Gazprom's website.[1]

Bovanenkovo-Ukhta 2 Gas Pipeline

A detailed route for this pipeline has been downloaded from OpenStreetMap.[15][17] It closely matches the route provided on Gazprom's website.[1]

Bovanenkovo-Ukhta 3 Gas Pipeline

The proposed pipeline would be owned and operated by Gazprom.[4] It would run parallel to the Bovanenkovo-Ukhta Gas Pipeline and Bovanenkovo-Ukhta 2 Gas Pipeline. In Ukhta, the pipeline would connect to the Yamal-Europe Gas Pipeline.[8]

In November 2020, Gazprom carried out engineering and environmental surveys on the route of the proposed pipeline. The results of engineering and environmental surveys will be used to develop an environmental impact assessment (EIA) of the projected facilities and will serve as initial data in the development of environmental protection measures for the period of its construction and operation. The assessment was planned to be completed and submitted for government review during the 4th quarter of 2021.[8] In July 2021, Gazprom initiated a tender for construction materials.[18] In November 2021, the head of thKomi Republic mentioned that the pipeline was expected to be commissioned in 2024-2028.[9]

In February 2022, the general director of the company Gazprom Transgaz Ukhta (subsidiary of Gazprom) noted that construction of the Bovanenkovo-Ukhta-3 gas pipeline was expected to start in 2022.[19] In May 2022, Gazprom announced a tender for development of design documentation related to the pipeline and related infrastructure.[20] In September 2022, the Ministry of Energy of Russia approved documentation on planning of the territory for Stage 2.9 of the construction of the pipeline.[21] The project was included in the list of "Planned Transmission Gas Pipelines" issued by the Ministry of Energy of Russia in May 2015 and revised in May 2023.[5] The Gazprom's 2022 Annual Report also lists the pipeline under "Prospective/Under Construction Projects".[22] In 2022-2023, a number of tenders to provide services for the construction of the pipeline was published on the website of Gazpromstroy, a subsidiary of Gazprom.[23]The construction works on the pipeline was planned in 2024-2028.[24]

In February 2024, the project was mentioned was part of the "Tambeyskoye-Bovanenkovo Gas Pipeline" proposal without any specific details.[25] The project was also included in the list of "Planned Transmission Gas Pipelines" released by the Ministry of Energy of Russia in May 2015 and revised in March 2024.[26] As of June 2024, there have not been any further updates.

Route

The pipeline would run parallel to the Bovanenkovo-Ukhta Gas Pipeline and Bovanenkovo-Ukhta 2 Gas Pipeline. In Ukhta, the pipeline would connect to the Yamal-Europe Gas Pipeline.[8] In this database, we used the existing route for Bovanenkovo-Ukhta 1 Gas Pipeline as the approximate route for the proposed pipeline segments 3, 4, 5, and 6.

A more detailed route includes the following locations:[27]

  • Komi Republic, Sosnogorsk district, Sosnogorsk urban settlement;
  • Pechora district, urban settlement Puteyets, urban settlement Pechora, rural settlement Ozerny, urban settlement Kozhva, rural settlement Chikshino, rural settlement Kadzherom;
  • Ukhta urban district, Inta urban district;
  • Vorkuta urban district;
  • Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Priuralsky district, inter-settlement territory;
  • Yamal district, inter-settlement territory

Bovanenkovo-Ukhta 4, 5 and 6 Gas Pipelines

The projects were included in the list of "Planned Transmission Gas Pipelines" released by the Ministry of Energy of Russia in May 2015 and revised in May 2023[5] and March 2024.[26] The proposed pipelines would be owned and operated by Gazprom. They would run parallel to the Bovanenkovo-Ukhta 1 Gas Pipeline, Bovanenkovo-Ukhta 2 Gas Pipeline, and Bovanenkovo-Ukhta 3 Gas Pipeline. In Ukhta, the pipelines will, likely, connect to the Yamal-Europe Gas Pipeline.
