Background
In December 2022, London-based oil and gas firm Perenco received technical approval from the Gabonese authorities for the construction of an LNG export terminal at Cap Lopez, Gabon.[3]
In February 2023, Perenco announced a final investment decision (FID) on the project. The facility will have a capacity of 0.7 mtpa LNG and 0.2 mtpa liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The project will expand on the existing Cap Lopez Oil Export Terminal operated by Perenco.[1] Construction is expected to take 3 years, with the project coming online in 2026.[1][3]
Perenco had bought the Cap Lopez terminal from TotalEnergies in 2021 for $350 million but was forced to suspend operations in April 2022 following a 300,000 barrel oil spill at the terminal.[3]
In May 2024, a representative of Perenco said that construction was expected to begin within the coming weeks, and that the design was "a unique concept, where we have a liquefaction barge that will be built and all modules sent to the FSU which will be moored alongside the FLNG."
