Background

The large facility was formerly occupied by Intel Corporation, which manufactured semiconductors there and closed in 2009. In 2018, a large portion of the facility was purchased by California based company 3G Ventures II for $13 million.[1] After operations began, the City of Colorado Springs began receiving noise complaints from local residents related to the cooling fans installed at the site, prompting the city to purchase specialized sound monitoring equipment.[2][3] As part of the mitigation for the noise, 3G ventures II owner John Chen used shipping containers stacked four high in an attempt to mitigate the fan noise, which later toppled over in a wind storm, causing more concern from the city related to worker safety.[4] According to a Youtube video by Compass Mining, the site has a capacity of 20 MW.[5]

In December 2020, 3G Ventures II filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection.[6] The current operational status of the facility is unknown as of July 2022. However, Compass Mining lists the facility on its website, along with other operational facilities.[7] Located in the same building complex is a company called Bit 49, which is a Bitcoin mining services and hosting company.
