Earthjustice was founded in 1971 as the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund. In 1997, the group changed its name to Earthjustice to better reflect its purpose of acting as legal advocate for the environment.

Earthjustice is a non-profit public interest law firm.

In 2008, it described itself as "dedicated to protecting magnificent places, natural resources, and wildlife of this earth, and to defending the right of all people to a healthy environment."[1] The group focuses on enforcing and strengthening environmental laws on behalf of hundreds of organizations, coalitions, and communities.

Climate & Energy Work

In 2021, Earthjustice's climate and energy work included the following:

  • Coal Program

"Earthjustice’s Coal Program was founded in 2008 to end our reliance on dirty, expensive, and outdated coal-fired power plants; clean up the toxic coal ash mess left by utilities throughout the country; and replace retiring coal plants with clean energy rather than gas."

  • Clean Energy Program

"Earthjustice established our Clean Energy Program in 2008 to use the power of the law to accelerate the transition to 100% clean, pollution-free energy, a necessary step to stopping the climate crisis. We fight for policies that get us there and remove barriers that stand in the way."

  • Fossil Fuels Program

"Earthjustice’s Fossil Fuels Program is taking on the fossil fuel industry’s efforts to pursue new paths to profit that not only accelerate the climate crisis, but also continue to cause harm to marginalized communities."

  • International Program

"The International Program partners with organizations and communities around the world to establish, strengthen, and enforce national and international legal protections for the environment and public health."

  • Regional Offices

"Across the country, our network of offices keeps us in close collaboration with the people and places that need us most. Our team of more than 170 environmental lawyers focus on distinct legal dockets of regional, national, and international scope — building progress one town, one community, one vast wilderness space, at a time."
