Two maps of Africa showing the cross-border, continent-wide interconnections that are expected under the Continental Power Systems Masterplan (CMP) between 2023 and 2040. Existing connectivity exists across three main regions: North-East, with transmission connections stretching from Morocco to Egypt and down to Tanzania; South-Central, with transmission connections stretching from South Africa and Namibia north into the Central African Republic; and North-West, which connects Mauritania to Nigeria with gaps between Guinea-Bissau and Liberia. Expected interconnections in 2040 will connect more of North Africa to Europe and the Middle East, as well as connect existing regions via transmission projects in previously disconnected countries like Angola, Malawi, Niger, Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. By 2040, transmission capacity is expected to reach 167 GW with 1,001 TWh of cross-border trade.
