Jáltipan-Salina Cruz Gas Pipeline is an operating natural gas pipeline in the states of Veracruz and Oaxaca, Mexico, transporting gas from the Gulf of Mexico to Mexico's Pacific coast.[1][2] An expansion project known as the Interoceanic Corridor Gas Pipeline would increase the pipeline's capacity fivefold and extend its northern terminus from Jáltipan towards Coatzacoalcos on Mexico's Gulf Coast.[3]

Location

The existing pipeline runs from Jáltipan, Veracruz to Salina Cruz, Oaxaca.[3]

  • Proposed capacity:
  • Length: 153 mi / 247 km[1]
  • Diameter: 12 inches[1]
  • Status: Operating
  • Start Year: 2014[1]
  • Associated infrastructure: Interoceanic Corridor gas pipeline

Background

Operated by Cenagas, the 12-inch pipeline originally transported LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), but in 2014 it was rehabilitated for use as a natural gas pipeline.[1][2][4]

Proposed Expansion

In 2015, Mexico's Secretariat of Energy released a five-year plan calling for a US$643 million expansion of the Jáltipan-Salina Cruz gas pipeline.[5]. The expanded Interoceanic Corridor gas pipeline, which has since evolved to become a key component of Mexico's ambitious Corredor Interoceánico development project, is designed to transport much greater volumes of natural gas between Mexico's Gulf and Pacific coasts.[3][6][7][8][9][10][11][9][12][13][14] For full details, see the Interoceanic Corridor gas pipeline page.

Opposition

Residents of several communities in the pipeline's path have staged protests against the project, citing concerns about hazardous materials leaks and poor communication from the pipeline's operators.[15] Following the Mexican government's October 2020 confirmation of plans for significant expansion of the pipeline, Carlos Beas Torres of the indigenous rights group Ucizoni (Union of Indigenous Groups of the Northern Isthmus) promised that local communities would demand environmental impact assessments, payment for rights of way, and consultations as required by the United Nations.[16]
