Background

The Goonyella Riverside mine is an open cut coal mine, operated by BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), near Moranbah in the Bowen Basin in Queensland, Australia.[4]

The mine had a record production year in 2021.[5] The mine is owned and operated by BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), a 50:50 joint venture between BHP Billiton and Mitsubishi Development. (BMA also operates the Peak Downs mine, Saraji mine, Norwich Park mine, Blackwater mine, the Gregory Crinum mine as well as the Hay Point Coal Terminal.

In 2015 BHP Mitsubishi Alliance was given permission for an extension to the Goonyella Riverside mine as part of the Red Hill coal project. Thi could mean that the Goonyella Riverside mine produces 18.5mtpa. Extracting a total of 32.5mtpa between the new Red Hill mine and the extended Goonyella Riverside mine.[6]
