Background

The Gyeong-dong Sangdeok Coal Mine is an operating underground coal mine in Gangwon Province, South Korea. The Gyeong-dong Sangdeok coal mine is an underground anthracite coal mine. It is operated by Kyungdong Company, Ltd., a private company (unlike the other significant operating coal mines in South Korea, which are owned by the state-owned Korea Coal Corporation).[2][3]

With the Republic of South Korea's last three state-run coal mines due to shut down by the end of 2025, Gyeong-dong Sangdeok Mine will be the only coal mine operating in Dogye, Ganwon-do Province.[4]
