Background

The Heidelberg Geseke cement plant was originally two adjascent cement plants; The Elsa plant and the Milke plant. The Elsa plant was eventually taken over by Anneliese Zementwerke AG in 1972, who then in 1994 also took over the Milke plant which, together, formed the Geseke group of cement plants. Anneliese Zementwerke AG was taken over by Heidelberg Cement in 2005, who rebranded the plants as the Geseke cement plant. The plant is currently pursuing the GeZero carbon capture project, which involves the construction of an oxyfuel kiln, capture system and train transport infrastructure at the Geseke plant. When completed, the system is predicted to capture 0.7 million tonnes per year of carbon dioxide.
