Background
The two existing coal-fired units of Ningxia Zhongning-1 power station, totaling 660 MW, were brought online between 2005 and 2006. The plant is owned by Ningxia Energy Group Co.[1] In 2020, Ningxia Tianyuan Manganese Industry Group became the wholly-owned shareholder of the plant.[2]
Description of Expansion
Ningxia Energy Group Co is planning to build two addiitonal coal-fired units, Zhongning-2 power station, with a total planned capacity of 2,000 MW. A call for bidding on construction of the units was released in 2013.[3]
The proposed capacity expansion was later changed to two 660 MW supercritical units (1,320 MW total).[4]
Nationwide Restrictions Imposed on Development of Coal-Fired Power Capacity
In January 2017 China's National Energy Administration suspended over 100 planned and under-construction coal power projects with a total capacity of over 100GW in 13 provinces, including Ningxia Zhongning-2. It is unclear when or if the projects will be revived.[5]
For details, see China's 2016 Restrictions on Development of Coal-Fired Power Capacity.
