China Huaneng Group is the largest government-owned power generation company in China. The company, commonly referred to as Huaneng, is listed in a 2009 report bt Greenpeace China as owning power stations with total installed capacity of 85.86 gigawatts.[1]
It is the parent company of Huaneng Power International, which states on its website that it and its "its subsidiaries develop, construct, operate and manage large power plants throughout China. As of June 30, 2007, the Company’s attributable and controllable installed capacity were respectively 31,747MW and 36,024MW, making it one of the largest listed power producers in China."[2]
Greenhouse intense
Huaneng has had a problematic environmental track record. Huaneng started work on the Ludila Hydroelectric Project in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River before they had secured environmental assessment approvals. In 2009, The Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) ordered for them to stop all work on their hydropower sites. Tao Detian, The spokesperson for MEP stated that “building dams without proper designs and environmental protection measures would damage the water ecology, both upstream and downriver, as well as negatively impact local communities.” In 2009 The MEP found, in a second occurrence, that a Huaneng coal-fire power project located in Inner Mongolia had failed to meet a requirement in the environmental review process and worsened the already scarce local water supplies.[2]
Overseas expansion
Huaneng had committed itself to becoming an internationally competitive power company but until now has only expressed interest in only several overseas hydropower projects. It's international strategy has been to focus on increasing its generation capacity through through asset accumulation, rather than development. Huaneng wants to become a world-class power producer comparable with the world's best power producers.[2]
Operations
The company oversees the national government's interests in 10 subsidiaries, including a 51% stake in Huaneng Power International. Through subsidiaries it develops and operates more than 85 thermal and hydropower plants. In addition to its power-generation business, the company plans to enter other sectors, including finance in China, transportation in China, information technology, and renewable energy in China. The company's investment division rank #15 in China by revenue and #21 by asset size.
