Background
The two existing coal-fired units of Tongchuan power station, totaling 1,200 MW, were brought online in 2007. The plant is owned by China Huaneng.[1]
Proposed expansion
Huaneng was planning to build two additional coal-fired units at this plant, with a total planned capacity of 2,000 MW. The project was on hold in 2014, having not been approved for an environmental permit due to air issues with the plant's location.[2]
The new units were permitted in 2015.[3]
Nationwide Restrictions Imposed on Development of Coal-Fired Power Capacity
In January 2017, China's National Energy Administration suspended over 100 planned and under-construction coal power projects with a total capacity of over 100 GW in 13 provinces, including Huaneng Tongchuan. It was unclear when or if the projects would be revived.[4]
For details, see China's 2016 Restrictions on Development of Coal-Fired Power Capacity.
In November 2021, one source noted the project would be considered for continued development during the 14th Five-Year-Plan.[5] As of 2021, the project seemed "reserved" for the 14th Five-Year-Plan period and was presumed "shelved."
With no recent known updates, the project was presumed cancelled as of July 2023.
