Lake Road (OH) power station
Lake Road Generating Station is a retired coal-fired power station owned and operated by the City of Cleveland, Ohio.

Background
The Lake Road Generating Station's first unit (Unit 8) was built in 1941 with a 25 MW capacity, using Lake Erie as a water source for the plant. Unit 8 was followed by three more units (Unit 9-11) in the next two decades. Unit 9 and 10 also had a 25 MW capacity, while Unit 11 had an 85 MW capacity. The plant was built and operated by Cleveland Public Power, a subsidiary of the City of Cleveland, Ohio. In 1994, all four units were shut down when the plant was retired.[1] The remaining operational part of the facility currently serves as a substation for the city grid and is still owned by Cleveland Public Power (CPP).
In April 2015, the defunct power plant leaked thousands of gallons of lube oil into Lake Erie. The EPA officials who inspected the facility after the disaster reported numerous tanks and containers of waste, oil, solvents and chemicals that needed to be removed, some of which were in a flooded basement covered by thirteen feet of water. Asbestos was also found throughout the plant. The Environmental Protection Agency ordered CPP to pay $1.7 million to fix the environmental issues found at the plant.[2]
In 2016, the Lake Erie Energy Development Corporation (LEEDCo), proposed building an offshore small wind farm in Lake Erie, which would consist of six 3.45 MW turbines. Once the 'Icebreaker Wind' project proposal passed, LEEDCo would use the Lake Road Generating Station's substation to help push the wind farm's power into the local grid. The cost of connecting the substation to the wind farm was estimated to be around $769,000.[3] According to LEEDCo, the project will create over 500 jobs and $85 million in economic impact. Construction and commercial operation of Icebreaker Wind is to begin in 2022.[4]
