Background
Lakkia Coal Mine is a surface lignite mine owned by Greece's state-owned Public Power Corporation S.A. (PPC) in West Macedonia, Greece.
Lakkia Mine began operating around 2008, but was put on care and maintenance some time later, as the need for lignite decreased and its operation was deemed economically unviable due to the poor coal deposit. After the June 2017 landslide in Amyntaio, Lakkia's operations were restarted.[6] At that time, it was producing 2.5 million tonnes of coal per year.[6]
The mine then ceased operations in 2021, but operations were said to be reopened in 2022 to supply coal to the Ptolemaida V, Agios Dimitrios, and Meliti power stations, whose 2023 closures were delayed until 2025.[7][8][9][6] As of September 2022, PPC was planning to mine 1 million tonnes of lignite over a period of 10 months.[6]
Hover according to PPC's 2021 annual report, mining at Lakkia permanently ceased in 2021.[7] News report from September 2022 referred to PPC's plans to reopen the Lakkia mine, but it was not clear whether it has happened. PPC's 2022 annual report further clarified that mining was permanently suspended in 2022.[4] Another source suggested that the mine discontinued operations already in 2021.[10]
