Project-level coal details

  • Coal source(s): North Bohemia and West Bohemia mines

Background

The Melnik power station involves three plants: Power plant I was commissioned as four units of 60 MW each in 1960; Plant II was commissioned as two units of 110 MW each in 1971; and Plant III was commissioned as a 500 MW unit in 1981. The power station is fueled by lignite coal from North Bohemia and West Bohemia mines.[7]

Coal retirements

Announcements in 2018

In January 2018, CEZ announced plans for three new plants to be built: one gas boiler (Melnik IV), one lignite boiler (Melnik V), and a waste facility (Melnik VI). Two of the old plants (II and III) would be shut down as soon as the new ones were operational:[8][9]

  • Melnik I - would stay operational;
  • Melnik II - would serve as backup as of mid-2020, and be shut down in 2022 with the startup of a new proposed lignite unit (Melnik V);
  • Melnik III - the 500 MW unit would serve as backup as of mid-2020, and be shut down in 2024 with startup of the waste facility (Melnik VI);
  • Melnik IV - a gas boiler, to be commissioned in 2021;
  • Melnik V - fluid boiler (lignite coal), to be commissioned in 2022;
  • Melnik VI - Energy Waste Utilization Facility (ZEVO), to be commissioned in 2024.

Melnik II and III plans

In March 2019, CEZ said Melnik III would be shut down in mid-2020, as well as one unit of the two-unit Melnik II. The remaining Melnik II unit was to focus on heat production for Prague, around 40 km away.[10]

The Mělník III power plant stopped supplying power to the grid in February 2021, and was shut down in August 2021.[11]

As of 2021, a tender for the construction of a gas boiler room, which should be in operation in 2024, was underway. The first steam-gas source was reportedly expected by 2026, which would be followed by the decommissioning of the Mělník II power plant.[11]

Although the project was shelved initially, CEZ has also revived plans to build a 200 MW gas-fired power plant to replace the coal units as they go offline.[12][13]

As of August 2021, the last remaining Melnik II unit was slated to taken offline in 2026.[14]

Melnik I plans

In August 2021, it was reported that the decommissioning of the Mělník I power plant was planned for 2030.[11]

Proposed coal expansion

Melnik V cancelled

In July 2020, ČEZ cancelled the public tender for the project without the contract being awarded.[15]
