Background

The Molodezhny Coal Mine (разрез Молодежный) is an operating surface coal mine in Karaganda Region, Kazakhstan. Molodezhny coal mine is owned and operated by Kazakhmys Coal LLC, which is part of Kazakhmys Corporation.

In April 1980, Molodyozhny open-pit coal mine was established based on Borly site. In July 1997, Molodyozhny coal mine was acquired by the Borly State Open Joint Stock Company under the management of Kazakhmys Corporation JSC. In October 2006, Borly Coal Department (including Molodyozhny Open-Pit Coal Mine LLC as a structural unit) – branch of Kazakhmys Corporation LLC was established. In 2018, the enterprise was restructured into Kazakhmys Coal LLC, which is the mine's operator and a subsidiary of Kazakhmys Corporation.[6]

The mine's capacity is reported at 8-9.5 million tonnes per annum.[6][7]

In 2022, an extensive report was published on the impact of the planned works at the mine. Projected production is 9.5-10 million tonnes up to 2031.[8]

Detailed photo report is available here.

Most of the coal produced is supplied to the thermal power stations owned by Kazakhmys in Kazakhstan.[9] These are Karaganda State Regional power station-2, Zhezkazgan power station and Kazakhmys Balkhash power station.
