Background

Berau Coal has a transshipment facility at the Muara Pantai Coal Anchorage. The company uses floating cranes to load coal directly from barges to ships with a loading rate of 12,000 tonnes per day. The company uses a submersible trans-shipper to transfer coal to ships from barges, with a loading rate of 15,000 to 18,000 tonnes per day.[2]

According to PT Berau Coal Energy's 2022 Annual report, at each mining location, the coal is transported by barges through the river which connects the river ports (Sambarata port, Lati port, Suaran port and Gurimbang port) to the open sea, in which transhipment facility is ready to load the buyer’s vessels. Total coal production by the four mines was 27.5 million tonnes in 2022. [3]

According to an industry report, the Muara Pantai anchorage exported 21.4 million tonnes of coal in 2022 and 29.4 million tonnes in 2023.[4][5]
