Background

Oktyabrskaya Coal Mine (шахта Октябрьская) is an underground mine in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia.[2] The Oktyabrskaya coal mine section used to be part of Zarechnaya Coal Company, which went bankrupt in 2017.[3] Oktyabrskaya (often referred to as Oktyabrsky section) together with the Zarechnaya coal mine were sold in July 2021 to the Coal Company Sila Sibiri (Power of Siberia).[4] The Oktyabrskaya coal mine is a section of Zarechnaya coal mine.[5] These are the only coal mines of Sila Sibiri.

Historically, most of the coal from this mine supplied Russian thermal power plants.[2][5]

It appeared that the mine was not operating in the first half of 2022 as reported production stood at 0 in an industry report.[6] The mine was therefore considered Mothballed as of October 2022.

However reports from 2023 indicate that the mine is operating.

According to the company's representative, the longwall of Oktyabrskaya coal mine with reserves of 1.31 million tonnes of coal of "G" and "DG" energy grades was commissioned in spring 2023, and currently mining is carried out only from this longwall.[7] It was planned to produce about 350 thousand tonnes of coal from the longwall face every month. Operations were temporarily suspended at the mine in April 2023, but were shortly resumed.[7]

Total coal production of Sila Sibiri was reported at 2.5 million tonnes in 2022.[8]
