The Upper Big Branch mine disaster occurred on April 5, 2010 at Massey Energy's Upper Big Branch Mine at Montcoal in Raleigh County, West Virginia. Twenty-five miners were killed and four missing in an explosion 980 feet underground. The accident was the worst in the United States since 27 miners were killed at Orangeville in Utah, in 1984.[1] Since January 1, 2010, the MSHA has issued Performance Coal 115 safety violations for the Upper Big Branch mine. For six of the past ten years, it has exceeded the national average in safety violations.[2]
