Background

The purpose of the FSRU is to serve as a terminal and supply the Russian exclave Kaliningrad with LNG in case the Minsk-Kaliningrad Interconnection Gas Pipeline is shut down.[8] It was briefly in use as a terminal in Kaliningrad and later remained idle.[9] The FSRU was leased to the Austrian OMV and used as an LNG storage facility, moored at the port of Rotterdam from August to November, 2019.[5] The vessel was later used as a gas tanker to transport LNG to India,[10][4] and transporting U.S. LNG to Europe.[11]

Theoretically, the FSRU can be used as an export/import terminal.[12]

As of June 2023, the FSRU remains idle in the Baltic Sea bay near Kaliningrad region.[2]

In January 2024, the FSRU completed a test run delivering gas from Portovaya LNG terminal to a gas receiving terminal in the Kaliningrad region.[7]
