Background
The world's first Lepolofen kiln went into operation at the Rudersdorf cement plant in 1885. Since then, the company has been dedicated to reducing carbon emissions through the use of secondary materials and fuel. Most recently, the company has explored options related to carbon capture through a partnership with Carbon Clean to install a 100 ton per day carbon capture system, the use of captured carbon to create aviation fuel through parternships with Sasol EcoFT and Enertrag. In 2024, owner Cemex in parternship with Linde won €157m from the EU Innovation Fund for a carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) initiative at the cement plant. The project will capture 1.3 million tonnes per year of CO₂, aiming for 100% decarbonisation by 2030.
