Background

The field was discovered in 2020.[12] It has been called the "biggest discovery in the Black Sea."[13] Turkey expects gas production to begin in 2023.[14] Access to gas deposits in the Black Sea will enhance Turkey’s negotiating position with Russia over the import of Russian natural gas.[15]

However, according to WoodMackenzie researcher Thomas Purdie, the Black Sea has a unique morphology. “It’s U-shaped, meaning shallow coastline turns to ultra-deep water rapidly,” he said. “The basin center is deep, cold, and highly anoxic. These harsh, challenging conditions require specialist experience, not currently at TPAOs disposal. The Sakarya development will almost be at the deepest limits of the Black Sea. This is an ultra-harsh environment.”[16]

A March 2023 report described the project as "under development now and due to start commercial production in 2024" with production extending through 2057.[13] The Italian export credit agency(SACE) and Export Finance Norway (Eksfin) were "considering financing for the project" as of March 2023.
