Background

The Strongman mine is an open cast mine inland from Rapahoe on the West Coast, South Island, New Zealand. An underground mine[2] operated from 1938 to 2003. In 1994 the original mine was replaced by the Strongman 2 mine further up the Nine Mile valley. The Strongman 2 mine closed in 2003. Solid Energy stated that the underground mines -- the Strongman and the Strongman 2 -- produced "around 8 million tonnes of coal". The company states that "the company opened Strongman Opencast Mine in May 2002 to secure continuity of supply for customers during the transition between Strongman 2 and Spring Creek Underground Mines". The Spring Creek mine was scheduled to begin production in February 2004.[3] In April 2004 Solid Energy stated that the opencast mine was scheduled to close "near the end of 2004".[4] Owner: Birchfield Coal
