Background
In January 2017, Summit Group signed an initial contract with Petrobangla to set up a liquefied natural gas terminal on Moheshkhali Island in Cox's Bazar at a cost of about US $500 million. It would have capacity of 3.5 mtpa. Summit said it would develop the floating facilities within 18 months of signing the final contract.[5][6]
In January 2019, Summit announced that it expected the FSRU to begin operations in March 2019.[7] The FSRU was commissioned in April 2019.[8]
Summit's FSRU ceased operations for routine maintenance in January 2024 and resumed operation in April 2024[9], maintaining the same capacity.[3]
In January 2024, Summit Group has signed a preliminary pact to supply 1.5 mtpa of LNG to state-run Petrobangla for 15 years, starting from October 2026.[10] In June 2024, the supply contract was finalized.[11]
In early June 2024, the FSRU was damaged by Cyclone Remal. The FSRU will be sent to Singapore or the Middle East for repairs which should last up to three weeks.[12] During this time production at the terminal will be temporarily shut down.[13][14]
