Paraná LNG Terminal is a proposed floating LNG terminal in the state of Paraná, Brazil. As of July 2023, no further development of the project has been reported for more than two years, so it is presumed to be shelved.
Location
The proposed terminal would be located off the coast of Paraná state, Brazil, on a pier 2km offshore from Pontal do Paraná, near the municipality of Paranaguá.[1]

Background
The Paraná terminal was originally proposed in 2016[3] as a project to be developed by Copel, the state power company of Paraná, in partnership with Shell. The terminal, accompanied by a pipeline between 90km and 127km in length, was to supply 2.2 million cubic meters of natural gas per day to the existing 484 MW Araucária power station. In addition, it was to supply other power plants yet to be constructed in the region, while providing 1.5 million cubic meters per day to other customers in Paraná state, and exporting 2 to 4 million cubic meters per day to customers in São Paulo state.
As of August 2019, two potential sites for the terminal were being studied, one near the existing Port of Paranaguá, the other closer to the Atlantic Coast at Pontal do Paraná. The Paranaguá location was considered to have better infrastructure, while the Pontal do Paraná location offered the advantage of deeper clearances for LNG vessels.[2][4]
A 2021 report from Brazil's energy research agency EPE indicated that the Pontal do Paraná location had taken precedence, and that the terminal, if developed, would incorporate a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) moored in an island-type configuration to a pier 2km offshore.[1] The terminal's purpose would be to supplement the limited gas supplies currently reaching Paraná state via the Gasbol gas pipeline, foster growth in the regional gas market, and support construction of a potential future power plant on the Paraná coast. The EPE report noted that as of mid-2021, development of the terminal remained dependent on sufficient demand.[1]
As of July 2023, no further development of the Pontal do Paraná FSRU project has been reported for more than two years, so it is presumed to be shelved. However, as of July 2023 an alternative FSRU project was being planned elsewhere in Paraná state by Nimofast, in the municipality of Antonina.[5][6]
