Background

In June 2012, EMBA Elektrik applied to build a 1,200-MW coal-fired power plant in the Kırklareli province of Thrace, about two miles away from the border with Bulgaria.[1]

Local residents protested the project at an environmental hearing in October 2012; at the hearing, Tahir Işık, the mayor of the nearby town of İğneada, appealed to EMBA's president to abandon the project, warning that the plant's ash pond would threaten the nearby swamp forests in İğneada Forests National Park.[2][3] In November 2012, a group of local residents, working together with the environmental organization DAYKO, camped out on the proposed plant's site as an act of protest and civil disobedience.[4]

Later in November 2012, Turkey's Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning apparently refused to approve the project, citing potential damage to forests in the area.[5][6] In 2013 the power station was reported as halted,[7] although permit evaluation is ongoing.[8]

In April 2016 EMBA called the project off, citing a lack of funds.[9]
