Background
The Troll oil and gas field is the largest oil field on the Norwegian continental shelf. It was discovered in 1979, and the initial plan for development and operation (PDO) was approved in 1986. The PDO was updated in 1990 before production began in 1995. Troll has had a phased development. Phase one (sometimes called "Troll Gas") recovered gas from Troll Øst while Phase two (sometimes called "Troll Oil")is focused on the oil reserves in Troll Vest. Phase one utilizes the "Troll A" wellhead and Phase two utilizes the "Troll B" and "Troll C" production facilities.[18][19]
Phase III
According to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate, as of February 2020, "the latest PDO amendment was approved in December 2018 for the Troll Phase III development: gas blowdown in Troll Vest."[20]
Equinor, the project operator, has stated "troll Phase 3 is one of the most profitable and resilient projects ever in our company." It is expected to extend the life of the Troll field beyond 2050.[21]
In April 2020, pipe laying for the 26 kilometer connection between the Troll A platform and the new subsea installations of the Troll Phase 3 was completed.[22]
