Unit-level fuel conversion details:
Unit 1: Converted from coal to bioenergy in 2013.
Background
Tychy Power Station is owned by the Tauron Group's Polska Energia, Poland’s second-largest utility. After a decade of operating as a coal plant, the company converted its 50 MW Unit 1 to biomass in order to meet stricter emissions limits that would be taking effect in 2016.[3][4]
Conversion of Unit 1 from coal to biomass
Unit 1 was converted to biomass in 2012[5] and began operating as a 40 MW biomass-fired unit in 2013.[6]
New coal unit
Tauron planned to also build a new coal-fired heat and power unit at the station with the capacity to generate 65 megawatts.[3][7]
The unit was completed in June 2016.[8]
In November 2022, the INSTRAT database listed 2035 as a possible retirement year for the new coal unit.[9]
