Background

The Ugboba power station is a mine-mouth plant proposed by Mosra Enerji Limited, a mining company based in Nigeria. The plant and its associated mine, the Idowu Falola Coal Mines, are located in the Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta state, Nigeria.[1]

The power plant might be related to a previous proposal by Ramos Electric Power for a 4 x 150 MW coal plant in neighboring Ugbodu,[2] or a Ramos 2 x 500 MW project reportedly proposed in 2017 as part of a government plan to increase coal power in Nigeria.[3][4]

In May 2023, a groundbreaking for the 600 MW power plant was held along with an inauguration ceremony for the Idowu Falola Coal Mines. Nigeria’s Minister for Mines and Steel Development said at the ceremony, "[w]e gave MOSRA Energy Limited license to mine and generate power because, we trust in their capacity and experience."[1][5][6]

According to reporting from September 2023, Mosra Enerji had started on foundation work for the power station.[7]
