Background

The Uvalnaya Coal Mine (Шахта Увальная) is an operating underground coal mine in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia. The Uvalnaya coal mine is owned and operated by Coal Company Sibirskaya JSC (not to be confused with Siberian Coal Energy Company, or SUEK). It is the only coal mine of the company.[9] Its final owner is allegedly a businessman Anatoly Skurov.[10]

Construction began in 2013. The first stage of the mine was opened in 2017, and the second stage in 2018 with 4.9 Mtpa of capacity.[11][12] In 2020 a project to increase the mine's capacity to 6.2 million tonnes per annum was developed, this was approved by Glavkosekspertiza in January 2022.[13][14]

The mine's production already exceeded 6 million tonnes in the last few years - with 6.2 million tonnes in 2021[15] and 6.1 million tonnes in 2020.[16] Production was 5.6 million tonnes in 2022.[17]
