Daltransugol coal terminal (терминал АО Дальтрансуголь), also referred to as the Vanino Bulk Terminal, is located near Vanino in Muchka Bay, Khabarovsk Krai, Russia.
Location
The map below shows the location of the Daltransugol coal terminal. The VaninoTransUgol coal terminal can be seen directly across the bay to the north.
Background
The Daltransugol coal terminal began operating in 2008 and is operated by SUEK. It originally had capacity to handle 12 million tonnes per annum (mtpa).[1] In 2017, SUEK completed the development of the external railway infrastructure at the Daltransugol coal terminal, which increased annual transhipment capacity to 24 mtpa.[2] In August 2021, the port shipped its 200 millionth ton of coal.[3]
In September 2020, the Daltransugol coal terminal received regulatory approval to expand its capacity to 40 mtpa. The expansion was planned to be complete by 2024.[4] Work on the 40 mtpa expansion began in August 2021.[3]
The Daltransugol coal terminal handled 23.2 million tonnes of coal in 2020, up from 20.5 million tonnes handled in 2019.[5] Coal from the Daltransugol coal terminal is shipped to Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, India, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China.[6] Most of the coal shipped through the terminal is mined by SUEK, but the terminal also provides shipping services for Elgaugol, Kuzbassrazrezugol and the Kuzbass Fuel Company.[7]
In October 2021, transhipment at the Daltransugol coal terminal ground to a halt due to a fire in the coal storage area.[7] Operations at the terminal resumed about two weeks later.[8]
In the 10 months of 2022, Daltransaugol's coal transhipment volumes were 14 million tonnes, down from 16.5 million tonnes in the same period of 2021.[9]
As of September 2023, the company was in the process of building additional infrastructure for the expansion project, with target capacity of 40 mtpa to be achieved by the end of 2025.[10] In September 2023, the company was completing the construction of railway infrastructure as part of an investment project, which will increase capacity to 33 mtpa.[10]
As of November 2024, the capacity of the terminal was confirmed at 33 Mtpa (the first stage of the expansion) and investments to expand capacity to 40 Mtpa were on-going.[11][12] Throughput in 2023 reached 15.8 million tonnes and based on 10m 2024, fell by 11% due to restrictions on railway capacity in the eastern direction.[11]
