Description
Anglo American Thermal Coal (AATC) contracted Vedanta Zinc International (VZI) to build a plant for its own use and possibly for the sale of electricity to South Africa’s national grid. VZI saw its power requirements as 350MW possibly for sale to the grid, 150MW for its Scorpion/Skorpion Zinc mine in Namibia, and 100MW for its Konkola Copper Mine in Zambia.[1]
The power plant would have operated using low-quality discarded coal from Anglo's Dalyshope Phase 1 Coal Mine as fuel, or coal that was reportedly unsuitable for Eskom power stations.[1]
The plant was expected to be operational in 2018.[2]
In April 2014, it was reported that the final scoping report for the proposed 600 MW plant had been rejected by the Department of Environmental Affairs. The project had been strongly opposed by NGOs and local communities over its environmental impacts. Anglo American and Vedanta said they were reapplying for environmental authorization.[3]
However, there have been no known reports of activity on the project since 2014, and it appears to be abandoned.
