Background

The Wambo Mining Complex is a surface and underground mine, operated by Peabody Energy, near Warkworth in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Australia. The Complex includes one of Peabody Energy's most productive surface mining operations and its newly commissioned North Wambo underground longwall mine. The Wambo surface mine uses truck-and-shovel methods. The North Wambo underground operation is ramping up to produce an additional 3 million tons of thermal and coking coal. Operating at capacity, the complex can produce up to 7 million tons (6.4 million tonnes) of thermal and low-ash, semi-soft coking coal. Coal from the Complex is exported to Japanese utilities and international coal traders. [9]

Peabody has a 100% interest in both mines but retains only 75% profits as part of a profit sharing interest with the non-voting minority owner.[10]
