Background
In 1999, AES purchased six power plants in New York (including the Jennison power station) from NGE Generation, Inc. for $953 million.[1] The other stations included in the deal were AES Somerset, AES Cayuga, AES Greenidge, AES Hickling, and AES Westover.[1]
In January 2005, AES Jennison power station was on cold standby, and AES planned to either install new pollution controls at the plant or shut it down.[2]
In 2008, New York's Department of Environmental Conservation reported on the status of the plant as follows:[3]
- The Department is proposing to modify and renew the SPDES permit for AES Jennison Generating Station. The AES Jennison Generating Station last operated in 2000 and there are no plans to restart the facility in the near future. The generator and turbine have been removed and both the intake and discharge canals were permanently sealed. As the only discharge will be from stormwater runoff and building sumps, the facility will no longer be permitted as a power plant.
