Background

The Aegean coal mines are a group of underground and surface lignite mines, operated by Ege Linyitleri İşletmesi Müessesesi Müdürlüğü (Aegean Lignite Enterprise), a subsidiary of the TTK, producing 14.2 million tonnes per annum, in Soma, Turkey.[3]

The operating mines include Eynez coal mine (also known as the Soma Mine), and Deniş coal mine.[4] The Aegean lignite coal mines are operated by Ege Linyitleri İşletmesi Müdürlüğü (Aegean Lignite Operations Directorate) or ELI.[3]

In the Soma region, coal mining started in 1913 by private entrepreneurs. Coal mines in Soma were nationalized in 1938, and were operated by the state-owned Etibank. Mine operations were transferred to TKI in 1957. In 1978, ELI was founded under TKI to operate the mines in Soma. [5]

As of March 2021, the ELI had 1459 employees, out of which 1193 were recorded as laborers(işçi), and 266 as office workers(memur).[6]
