Background

Akdeniz Enerji power station is a proposed two-unit 1,634-MW coal-fired power station. Nurol Enerji, a small Turkish energy company, has proposed the plant be built near Yeşilovacık in Mersin province in Turkey.[1] Nurol applied for the government license in August 2012.[2]

Local hearings on the proposed plant have been met with protests, with locals and environmentalists arguing that the plant would be harmful to the Mediterranean monk seals that live in the area.[3][4] It appears that the project has been abandoned.
