Background on Mine
In 2003, South Eastern Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India proposed the Amlai/New Amlai Underground Coal Mine Project operated with a capacity 0.45 million-tonnes-per-annum. The mine had an area of 724 Ha is in the village of Amlai.
A public hearing for the project was conducted by the State Pollution Control Board on 30th August, 2003 and the environment clearance was granted on 9 June 2006.[6]
The Project area involved 383 ha of forest land, which is reportedly yet to be diverted for non- forestry purposes, as mandated under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980.
The mine was temporary closed on 20th September, 2011 due to exhaustion of coal reserves. Accordingly, revalidation of the said environmental clearance is required not for coal mining operations but to implement the Mine Closure Plan.[7]
Yet in 2020, the mine remained productive according to the Ministry of Coal.
