Background

The Magadh Amrapali coal mines are a network of opencast mines, operated by Central Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India, producing approximately 26 million tonnes-per-annum, on the North Karanpura coalfield in Jharkhand state, India.

The Magadh-Amrapali area includes the Amrapali, Magadh, Pachra, and Sanghmitra operating and proposed mines. The network of coal mines on the Magadh Amrapali Area are owned by Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), a subsidiary of Coal India.

The Magadh Opencast Coal Mine Project of 20 million tonnes received environment clearance in October 2008.[9]

The Amrapali Opencast Project with capacity 12 MTPA, produced 6.50 tonnes in 2018, on 619.87 hectares was given EC vide letter dated 3rd January, 2006, under the provisions of the EIA Notification, 1994. However, due to change in EIA notification, the project's EC underwent revalidation.[10] The mine has undergone several expansions, including a production increase to 14.4 million tonnes per annum, which was approved in March 2020. In 2021, CCL presented a proposal to enhance production at Amrapali OC from 14.4 to 25 MTPA (35 MTPA peak) within the existing project area of 619.87 hectares.[11] According to the expansion pre-feasibility report, the company will undertake the expansion in a phased manner, with phase I excluding un-diverted forest land.[12]

Pachra was a proposed opencast 15 MTPA project to be run by Central Coalfields Limited in the North Karanpura coalfields. As of November 2020, the mine had been removed from CCL's list of "mega projects."

Sanghamitra Opencast coal mine project is a proposed 20 MTPA mine to be run by Central Coalfields Limited in the North Karanpura coalfields.[13] As of July 2020, CCL is inviting bids for developers.[14] In response to a right of information request in 2021, the mine is still listed by the Government of India as an active new mine project.[15]
