Background
The Anzherskaya-Yuzhnaya Coal Mine (шахта Анжерская-Южная) is an operating underground coal mine in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia. The Anzherskaya-Yuzhnaya coal mine is an underground coal mine. It is owned and operated by Anzherskaya-Yuzhnaya Coal Company LLC, which bought the mine in a bankruptcy auction in October 2018.[8] It appears that the company is owned by private individuals.[9]
It had a capacity of 650,000 tonnes per year in 2006[10], by 2018-2019 the mine was operating at about 1 Mtpa capacity.[11]
In July 2019, rock pieces collapsed in a ventilation shaft at the mine. At the time of the emergency there were 66 people inside the mine; one miner died.[12]
In December 2021, the court suspended coal mining in some parts of the mine for 90 days on the basis of violations of industrial safety norms. In January 2022, about 90 miners were evacuated from the mine due to ventilation malfunction.[13][14] Despite continuous concerns on safety, the mine appeared to be still working in 2022: in June 2022, following another inspection, miners were found in the dead-end section of the mine where mining operations are considered dangerous, and discovered raised methane levels.[15] Operations were suspended again. Another suspension of operations for 10 days was issued in January 2023.[16]
As of February 2021, the mine's owner was planning an expansion which would raise the mine's capacity to 1.45 MTPA.[17] In 2021 Glavkosekspertiza approved the project of mine reconstruction.[17] It is not clear whether this has gone ahead. With no news on the project, continuous safety violations and no recent production data available, the expansion project is considered Shelved.
