Background

Initially, there was a lot of speculation and secrecy surrounding the CO Mine 1 Landco LLC Montrose County facility and whether it was being used to mine cryptocurrency. It was reported that the company CO Mine 1 Landco LLC bought the site for $2.5 million in May 2021.[1] The company's rezoning application to change the land use from agricultural to light industrial was subsequently approved in September of that year by the Montrose County Planning Commission. [2] Since the operation did not entail the creation of an industrial product that needed inspection, even county officials remained oblivious about the nature of operations at the site. [3]. Construction began soon after on the site to set up large solar arrays spread over 74 acres. [4]

After months of inquiry, in June 2022, Aspen Creek Digital Corporation formally announced that it had begun cryptomining operations at the facility. The facility has an operational capacity of 6 MW which is supported by an onsite behind-the-meter 10 MW solar farm. While the facility is owned by Aspen Digital and is primarily being used by it to mine cryptocurrency, it also serves as a co-location facility for Galaxy Digital, another cryptocurrency mining company.
