Background

In May 2023, China Africa Building Material NIG SA (CBM Nig) received approval from Niger’s energy regulatory authority to construct a 30 MW captive coal-fired power station for a cement plant in the rural commune of Badaguichiri in Tahoua Region, Niger.[5] CBM Nig was the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor for the cement plant and power station, with the Wangkang Group as investors.[6][7]

The Badaguichiri Cement Plant was inaugurated in July 2023,[8][9] and the power station was presumed to be operating.

In August 2024, the Minister of Energy visited the power station and confirmed it would receive coal from the Société nigérienne du charbon (SONICHAR).[10]
