Background

Baldota Steel & Power Limited (BSPL) was founded as part of the Baldota conglomerate. The company announced to construct a steel plant in Koppal district of Karnataka with an annual capacity of 3.5 million tonnes in 2 phases & a 220 MW power plant along with 100 MW solar power.[1]

The project was originally proposed by Aaress Iron and Steel Limited (AISL) in 2019. In July 2021, the company secured environmental clearance for the project. In August 2023, the techno-economic feasibility report was submitted.[1][2] The environmental clearance was transferred from AISL to BPSL in 2024.[3]

The project will need an investment of INR 18,000 Crores and the Phase 1, commissioning is planned by Quarter 2 of 2026.[4]
