The Battelle Memorial Institute is a 501(c)(3) non-profit research organization headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, that describes itself as "a global research and development organization."
Fracking
In July 2012 the Battelle Memorial Institute released an analysis finding that the Environmental Protection Agency´s multi-year investigation of the relationship between hydraulic fracturing and drinking water supplies was overbroad and had strayed far from what lawmakers intended when they first ordered the EPA to investigate the issue in 2010. The assessment was funded by the American Petroleum Institute and America's Natural Gas Alliance.[1]
Carbon Capture and Storage
In October 2009 the Battelle Memorial Institute's Pacific Northwest Division was awarded a $500,000 grant by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for a Carbon Capture and Storage demonstration project.
The DOE's media release stated that "Battelle researchers will partner with Boise White Paper LLC and Fluor Corporation to demonstrate geologic CO2 storage in deep flood basalt formations in the State of Washington. Fluor Corporation will design a customized version of its Econamine Plus™ carbon capture technology for operation with the specialized chemical composition of exhaust gases produced from combustion of black liquor fuels."[2]
